Radiance
There’s a lot of things I absolutely love about this, and a few that I feel really could have come out better.

After matting the Mantid and Rambeetles pieces, I got really interested in doing a piece that would be matted in multiple sections. I was preparing for the art show then and wanted something really cool to put in my exhibit. My first sketches were a vertical chinese dragon, a vertical giraffe stretching its neck up through the sections, and a horizontal coiled snake. I decided to kill two birds with one stone and design a creature for this layout. I really liked the dragon idea, so I brought in influence from chinese/eastern dragons, the Mayan and Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, along with traits of moths, caterpillars, skinks, salamanders, stegosaurus, and there’s even some monkey in there.
Firstly, I knew I wanted it to have a buttload of legs; really bring out the ‘creeping/slinking along’ look. However, I’ve seen many ‘original’ creatures with more than the usual number of legs, and in nearly every one of them, the additional legs are just anatomical photocopies of either the fore or rear limbs. Individual limbs have their specific anatomy for a specific purpose, so I wanted to give each of this creature’s limbs an equal purpose to it. In comes the caterpillar influence!

Caterpillars have two types of legs, ‘prolegs’ and ‘true legs’. The prolegs are lost in the metamorphosis to become a butterfly. I wanted to give this creature similar appendages- larger, stronger rear legs to hold its weight and to facilitate the majority of its movement, while the smaller, slimmer, but much more dexterous forelimbs could be used for skillfully manipulating objects. The look of all the limbs was largely based upon skinks and salamanders.
Now back to giving every limb an equal, unique purpose- aside from the two sets of limbs, I had to figure out the bone and muscle structure of the inner limbs in order to map out their pose and function in movement. This was difficult because a pair of legs that simply moved back and forth too close to other limbs would constantly bump into them, not allow a full stride, and generally be obnoxious to have. Eventually, I decided on a very wide, sprawling gait. The fore-most and rear-most limbs of each set would move mostly forwards-backwards while still sprawling, and the inner-most limbs of each set would sprawl outwards much farther with less forward-back motion to help facilitate the transition of movement along to the rest of the body.
The blue plates along its back are based upon those of a stegosaurus, while the large brown scales are actually based off of some decorative carvings around depictions of Quetzalcoatl in the architecture of many temples in Mesoamerica.

I think what I’m dissatisfied with here is that the dragon influence is too obvious. In one of my sketches, it had a much shorter, stouter head; almost turtlish. I think if I had modeled head more like that, it would have helped to mask the dragon influence.

Art assignment I did last semester- the assignment was called ‘The Missing Peace’ and was to be based around the Dalai Lama’s Inner Peace.
This was how I explained my thing to my friends:
"So the assignment was ‘The Missing Peace’, and I figured inner peace has to come from inside you, you know, only you can truly produce your own ‘inner peace’ and this guy’s inner peace is missing because someone fucking tore it out of him.”
I’m very eloquent.

Three weeks ago, my friend Joe lost his father to a long battle with cancer. Earlier this week, Joe’s mother got in a fatal car accident which resulted in her death. Joe is a senior in high school and most of his money was already going towards paying bills for his family. Unfortunately, now he has no more close family and has the responsibility of paying for the funerals for both of his parents.
I know most of you probably won’t be able to help, but I knew it couldn’t hurt to spread the word. My school and community are trying to come together to raise money to help him out with the funeral expenses.
If there is any chance you are able to make any sort of financial donation to helping him out, please contact me on my personal blog for more information. Something like a $10-20 donation could help tremendously, but please remember that even the smallest amounts (even $1 if that’s all you can do) will be greatly appreciated.
Even if you can’t donate money, it would be wonderful if you could spread the word. Prayers and positive vibes sent his way could also be a great help. This is a tragic thing for someone at his age to be going through. Please do anything you can to help whether it’s donations, spreading the word, or prayers for him.

oh man if you can donate, please do, if you can’t then spread this like wildfire. No one should ever have to deal with this at this age

Dune Runner
This one was an experiment. He was painted with coffee and a bunch of different types of teas- black cherry, sage, apple cider tea, & raspberry. Outlines defined with prismacolor colored pencils.
I first sketched out this guy on notebook paper while listening to “Harsh Wasteland” of the Jak 3 soundtrack. While I absolutely loved that sketch (it had much more flow and power to it) I realize it was not quite the greatest ‘original creature’ design and is pretty bland. The only animals I can really cite as reference here are crocodile, hippo, and boar.
Still, it worked out pretty OK for a first-time experiment.

Just FYI I’ve been dead lately on tumblr firstly because of having to prepare for an extremely stressful art show, secondly, ceasing to care much about this art blog, and thirdly because of my school Mac (no decent comp of my own) randomly deciding to block the tumblr dashboard… on and off.

But it’s working now, so get ready for an art dump
